11 Firework Safety Tips Before You Celebrate

We all love fireworks, and especially looking at them with our families and friends. But remember they can cause serious and even fatal injuries when not correctly handling them. These are some tips taken directly from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here are some ideas to stay safe during the holidays.

  • Never let young children play or set off fireworks
  • Do not buy fireworks that are packed in brown paper as this indicates they were produced for professional firework shows. They could be very dangerous for buyers.
  • Always have an adult supervising activities involving fireworks. Usually young children suffer from injuries from sparklers the most. They burn at about 2,000 degrees which is enough to melt metal.
  • Never have your body directly over a firework device when you light the fuse. Immediately back up to a safe distance after igniting.
  • Never pick up or re-light fireworks that did not light all the way.
  • Do not point fireworks at people.
  • Keep a hose ready or buck of water in case of a mishap.
  • Light fireworks one by one and back up quickly.
  • Do not carry fireworks around in your pocket or shoot them from metal or glass containers.
  • After the fireworks complete burning, douse the used device with enough water from a bucket or hose before throwing it away to prevent a trash fire.
  • Make sure it is legal to use fireworks in your area before purchasing them.
